\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced the creation the\u00a0<\/span>bipartisan\u00a0<\/span>Protect Michigan Commission within the Department of Health and Human Services<\/span>\u00a0(DHHS)<\/span>\u00a0to help\u00a0<\/span>raise awareness of the safety and effectiveness of an approved COVID-19 vaccine, educate the people of this state, and help protect the health and safety of all Michigan residents.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cRight now, we are on the brink of great breakthroughs when it comes to a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, and we must begin to educate Michiganders about how important it is that we<\/span>\u00a0all get vaccinated so we can eradicate this virus once and for all. That\u2019s what the Protect Michigan Commission is all about,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Governor Whitmer.\u00a0\u201cTh<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0bipartisan group of leaders\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0uniquely equipped to help\u00a0<\/span>reinforce the importance of everyone getting vaccinated.\u00a0<\/span>Until we eliminate COVID-19 once and for all, we must continue to wear masks, practice safe social distancing, and wash hands frequently. Let\u2019s all continue to do our part.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Commission will be chaired by: Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0Former Lieutenant Governor Brian\u00a0<\/span>Calley<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0Chief Medical Executive and DHHS Chief Deputy for Health Dr. Joneigh Khaldun<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0Detroit Pistons player Blake Griffin<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0Dr. Mona Hanna-<\/span>Attisha<\/span>, MD, MPH, FAAP, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and C.S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>SER<\/span>\u00a0Metro CEO Eva\u00a0<\/span>Dewaelsche<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Soumit<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Pendharkar<\/span>, MHA, FACHE, Health Administrator for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians;\u00a0<\/span>Spectrum Health President & CEO\u00a0<\/span>Tina\u00a0<\/span>Freese-Decker<\/span>; and Jamie Brown, Registered Nurse and\u00a0<\/span>President<\/span>\u00a0of the Michigan Nurses Association.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>commission<\/span>\u00a0will consist of at least 50 members that will represent the gr<\/span>e<\/span>at diversity of our state<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis year, we have confronted some of the greatest challenges of our generation, and, in every moment, Michiganders have risen to meet these challenges head-on,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Lt.<\/span><\/strong>Governor Gilchrist\u00a0said. \u201cWith a safe and effective vaccine on the horizon, the Protect Michigan Commission is bringing our state together once again to ensure that every Michigander has the information and resources they need to get vaccinated at the appropriate time. Our clearest path to healthy communities, a growing economy, and kids learning in their classrooms is through this vaccine.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cOne of the most important things every adult should be doing now is planning for how they will get the vaccine when it becomes available to them. The Protect Michigan Commission will make sure all Michiganders have the information they need to make those plans,\u201d said Chief Medical Executive and MDHHS Chief Deputy for Health\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Joneigh Khaldun. \u201cAs we get closer to distributing a safe and effective vaccine, think about how you can play a role in ending this pandemic. Wear your mask now so you\u00a0<\/span>can prevent the spread, and avoid indoor gatherings. 2021 will be the year when Michigan beats back this pandemic, we just have to stay the course.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Protect Michigan Commission will serve in an advisory capacity to Governor Whitmer<\/span>\u00a0and DHHS<\/span>, and will, among other things, provide public leadership to elevate and reinforce the importance of an approved COVID-19 vaccine, identify barriers that may impede the acceptance of an approved COVID-19 vaccine by Michigan residents, including identifying areas or groups within this state that are likely to experience vaccine hesitancy<\/span>, and develop an outreach action plan designed to overcome these barriers. The Commission must complete its work and submit a brief final report to the governor by December 31, 2021.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re going to ensure that\u00a0<\/span>everyone in our state<\/span>\u00a0ha<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0the information they need to get a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, we must all wo<\/span>rk to<\/span>gether as Michiganders,\u201d said<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0former\u00a0<\/span>Lieutenant Governor Brian\u00a0Calley. \u201cI am<\/span>\u00a0grateful for Governor Whitmer\u2019s leadership on this issue, and<\/span>\u00a0proud to\u00a0<\/span>serve<\/span>\u00a0alongside Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist\u00a0<\/span>and all of these leaders\u00a0<\/span>on a bipartisan commission\u00a0<\/span>that truly reflects the great diversity of our state. Let\u2019s get to work.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Currently, Pfizer and\u00a0<\/span>Moderna<\/span>\u00a0have submitted requests for emergency use authorization of COVID-19 vaccines to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
