{"id":3041,"date":"2020-12-10T15:51:40","date_gmt":"2020-12-10T15:51:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peoriamag.com\/?p=3041"},"modified":"2020-12-14T15:53:10","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T15:53:10","slug":"family-honors-32-year-old-killed-in-lansing-with-a-toy-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peoriamag.com\/?p=3041","title":{"rendered":"Family honors 32-year-old killed in Lansing with a toy drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The family of 32-year-old Marcus Jackson-Burton is working to honor his legacy through a Christmas toy drive to bless children right here in Mid-Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson-Burton and his brother Steven Jackson\u00a0were both shot\u00a0at the Pleasant Grove Plaza in South Lansing on Aug. 3, 2020. Steven died at the scene and Marcus was taken to the hospital. He died from his injuries on Aug. 4, leaving behind four children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely been a journey,\u201d Marcus\u2019 Mother, Miranda Burton-Hinton said. \u201cI never would have thought or even began to imagine that our family would be going through something so tragic like this, but you know, we\u2019re determined that we\u2019re gonna turn our pain into a purpose and to give back to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burton-Hinton said her son was the jokster and the the life of the party.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\">\u201cAlways kept a smile on his face, the helper, the giver, always giving back\u2026doing what he can to help somebody else. Just all around great guy,\u201d she said.<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Even in his death, Marcus was able to save seven people through the\u00a0Gift of Life\u00a0Michigan. His mother said that has instilled in his family a passion and drive to keep giving back to the community, to carry on his legacy.<\/p>\n<p>When Burton-Hinton launched the toy drive back in November, she never expected such a huge response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now we can\u2019t even park our cars in our garage, it\u2019s just overwhelming. I am just so honored to just be able to just bless somebody\u2019s family for Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toys will be donated to the Sparrow Hospital Pediatric Unit, a local women\u2019s shelter, and through Secret Santa to families in need. Donations are being accepted through Dec. 15.
