{"id":3050,"date":"2020-12-04T15:57:22","date_gmt":"2020-12-04T15:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peoriamag.com\/?p=3050"},"modified":"2020-12-14T15:58:18","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T15:58:18","slug":"hunting-booms-as-a-respite-from-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peoriamag.com\/?p=3050","title":{"rendered":"Hunting booms as a respite from COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"subscriber-preview\">\n<p>Business is booming for game processors this hunting season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>While many indoor leisure activities and spectator sports have been curtailed by the pandemic, hunters are more fortunate: The great outdoors isn\u2019t shuttered by health restrictions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Game processors in Michigan and elsewhere in the Great Lakes Basin say business is promising so far \u2014 and they expect continued steady customer traffic through the end of the season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Some hunters who are working fewer hours due to the pandemic are using their extra time to seek deer, bear and other game.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cThis hunting season has started out with a boom,\u201d said Donna Luft, who owns and operates Luft Farm Wild Game Processing with her husband in Crystal Falls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Bow season \u2014 when hunters can use only bows and arrows to kill game \u2014 is ongoing in many states. In Michigan, it began Oct. 1 and runs through Nov. 14. It runs again from Dec. 1 to Jan 1.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cWe are up 50% from last year and [have seen] a lot of really nice bucks,\u201d Luft said. \u201cIf this is any indication of how the season is going to be, we are going to be very busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>The manager of a processing shop in Wisconsin reports he\u2019s also had a busy first few weeks of bow season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cThe count for bow season is probably double what it was last year,\u201d said Jeff Zupan, who manages Bunzel\u2019s Deer Processing in Milwaukee. \u201cIt\u2019s been very busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Bow season in Wisconsin began on Sept. 12 and runs through Jan. 3.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Bunzel\u2019s employs 14 butchers to process deer and sometimes bigger game, such as elk and black bear.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>While the catering end of his business has taken a hit because of pandemic restrictions that limit large groups, over-the-counter business has jumped, Zupan said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen more people out, just because there\u2019s so many more people off of work and working from home that can get out and set their schedules a little bit differently,\u201d Zupan said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>The arrival of hunting season offered his customers some respite from the pandemic, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cA lot of these people, myself included, are campers,\u201d Zupan said. \u201cWe take our RVs and we go away because it\u2019s so nice to get out of the city where there are all these mask mandates.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Business is booming for game processors this hunting season.
