{"id":3293,"date":"2020-10-18T17:45:15","date_gmt":"2020-10-18T17:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peoriamag.com\/?p=3293"},"modified":"2020-12-14T17:46:07","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T17:46:07","slug":"fighter-pilot-who-died-in-michigan-plane-crash-identified-as-37-year-old-combat-veteran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peoriamag.com\/?p=3293","title":{"rendered":"Fighter pilot who died in Michigan plane crash identified as 37-year-old combat veteran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Text__StyledText-sc-1t31rwz-0 ixeUvg\">Officials have released the identity of the Wisconsin-based\u00a0fighter pilot who died after a plane crashed in Michigan\u2019s Upper Peninsula\u00a0on Tuesday, Dec. 8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__StyledText-sc-1t31rwz-0 ixeUvg\">On Friday, the Wisconsin Air National Guard\u2019s 115th Fighter Wing\u00a0identified the deceased fighter pilot\u00a0as Captain Durwood \u201cHawk\u201d Jones, a 37-year-old decorated combat veteran from Albuquerque, New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__StyledText-sc-1t31rwz-0 ixeUvg\">At about 8 p.m. on Dec. 8, Jones\u2019 F-16 Fighting Falcon\u00a0crashed in the Hiawatha National Forest\u00a0during a training mission. Authorities say Jones was the only person aboard the aircraft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__StyledText-sc-1t31rwz-0 ixeUvg\">\u201cWe are deeply saddened by this tragic loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,\u201d 115th Fighter Wing Commander Col. Bart Van Roo said Friday. \u201cToday is a day for mourning, and the 115th Fighter Wing along with the entire Wisconsin National Guard stands with the pilot\u2019s family as we grieve the loss of a great Airman, and patriot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__StyledText-sc-1t31rwz-0 ixeUvg\">The 115th Fighter Wing participated in a coordinated search effort with local emergency responders, the U.S. Coast Guard and other government agencies following Tuesday\u2019s crash. The Hiawatha National Forest spans about 879,000 acres, according to the forest\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__StyledText-sc-1t31rwz-0 ixeUvg\">The cause of the plane crash wasn\u2019t immediately known and is still being investigated as of Dec. 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__StyledText-sc-1t31rwz-0 ixeUvg\">The F-16 was assigned to the 115th Fighter Wing at Truax Field Air National Guard Base in Madison, Wisconsin.
