{"id":3299,"date":"2020-10-13T17:47:32","date_gmt":"2020-10-13T17:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peoriamag.com\/?p=3299"},"modified":"2020-12-14T17:48:42","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T17:48:42","slug":"let-them-play-speakers-hoping-that-gretchen-whitmer-was-listening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peoriamag.com\/?p=3299","title":{"rendered":"Let Them Play speakers hoping that Gretchen Whitmer was listening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"DH453YP7MBAHBAARCPTR4PW7IA\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">About 400 athletes, coaches and parents gathered on the steps of the state Capitol for their voices to be heard.<\/p>\n<p id=\"KX5ESQV2MZFW5AUHFE6AKB5F4Q\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">Now they wait to see if their words found the right ears.<\/p>\n<p id=\"QVXBPKN5MNFFRLFV7FPKCHVMSA\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">The\u00a0Let Them Play movement took to Lansing on Friday afternoon, hosting a rally to support the return to action for high school athletes across Michigan whose season was put on pause. Organizers left the event feeling like they made their point but uncertain if they made a difference.<\/p>\n<p id=\"23FOJEBLZVEAHGBM2QABTXDKOY\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cThe speakers were incredible,\u201d said Jayme McElvany, head of the Let Them Play group that is asking Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to exempt high school sports from the latest shutdown brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p id=\"LQYBPHRTZRFKVLLWV4U2RW2M3Q\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cTheir speeches were spot-on, all about the mental health of these kids and the fact that the MHSAA proved we could do it and do it safely. If she would listen, the messages were amazing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"Y7DZJKTQFNB55I2QHKOASB7FBU\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cUnfortunately, I don\u2019t think she cares enough to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"ROH6WDB4BNALJMBUORNH3WHAFY\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">The Let Them Play group hosted a\u00a0similar rally in August\u00a0after it was announced that the football season would be canceled in the fall and moved to spring. Shortly after that rally, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services green-lighted a return-to-play that saved the fall sports season.<\/p>\n<p id=\"DDMDB4KJ2ZHXHLRRI3ZOIKMIQ4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">But with three weeks left in the football season \u2013 and one week remaining in the volleyball and swimming seasons \u2013 all sports were put on pause. When the shutdown was extended to Dec. 20, it put the completion of those seasons in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"LCWTP5C33VBNLMO3LV63O6NTUM\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">The Let Them Play group, which has nearly 19,000 members on Facebook, organized a second rally and sounded off on Friday in Lansing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"LO4TFBHSSJHNVKORMPFAUJHR5A\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cOh, man, it was so cold, but it was so great,\u201d said McElvany after the nearly two-hour event that took place on a windy, 40-degree day. \u201cI was surprised that so many were there, because it was last-minute and it was frigid.<\/p>\n<p id=\"D2PO3NP3AZB4VA224XDMZYHPTQ\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cThis rally showed the kids we\u2019re fighting for them. They are not alone. They are not invisible. And we\u2019re not going to stop fighting for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"AYXTQ5G3JZB4XN6XRQ72HIOITE\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">Athletes, coaches, administrators and parents were among the 22 speakers who shared their thoughts at a podium set up on the steps of the Capitol building.
