{"id":3570,"date":"2020-12-27T14:41:11","date_gmt":"2020-12-27T14:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peoriamag.com\/?p=3570"},"modified":"2020-12-28T14:58:10","modified_gmt":"2020-12-28T14:58:10","slug":"prehistoric-human-remains-found-along-michigan-lake-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peoriamag.com\/?p=3570","title":{"rendered":"Prehistoric human remains found along Michigan Lake park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MICH. &#8211;\u00a0 Officials are communicating with Native American groups to help decide what to do next with prehistoric human remains found along the Lake Michigan shoreline.<\/p>\n<p>A visitor found the remains in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore three years ago, took them out of the park and then returned them a year later, Scott Tucker, the park\u2019s superintendent, told MLive.com.<\/p>\n<p>Examinations at a medical examiner\u2019s office and further analysis of the bones at Western Michigan University helped identify them as prehistoric remains most likely tied to prehistoric Native American populations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"asset_zone zoneInlineA\" data-config-asset-position=\"3\">\n<div class=\"hst-freeform hdnce-e hdnce-item-96914\">\n<div id=\"878c6a92-aace-411b-8d3b-fd644c47e83e\" class=\"hst-exco-player\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to respect the ancestral remains that were found, and let the tribes determine the next steps,\u201d Tucker said.<\/p>\n<p>The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act requires a role for Native Americans regarding remains discovered on federal or tribal lands. Park officials have been holding consultations with five regional tribal communities about the lakeshore remains.<\/p>\n<div id=\"a300-mobile\" class=\"ctpl-duplicated-ad\">\n<div id=\"a300-mobile-2\" class=\"ad_deferrable\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Erosion caused by higher water levels in Lake Michigan in recent years likely led to them to become exposed, according to Tucker.
